Kmart, once a retail giant, no longer trades publicly. Consequently, you won’t find a dedicated Kmart listing on Google Finance or other major stock market trackers.
To understand why, we need to delve into Kmart’s financial history. Kmart Corporation filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2002. The company struggled with various factors including aggressive competition from Walmart and Target, a lack of investment in modernization, and inefficient inventory management.
Following its bankruptcy reorganization, Kmart merged with Sears, Roebuck and Co. in 2005. The newly formed company became Sears Holdings Corporation. At this point, tracking Kmart’s performance became indirect, as its financial results were consolidated within Sears Holdings. Sears Holdings traded under the ticker symbol SHLD on the NASDAQ. Therefore, if you were interested in the financial health of Kmart after 2005, you would have looked at Sears Holdings’ data on Google Finance.
However, Sears Holdings’ troubles continued. The company faced similar challenges to Kmart, including declining sales, increasing debt, and a failure to adapt to the changing retail landscape, particularly the rise of e-commerce. Sears Holdings eventually filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2018.
Following the 2018 bankruptcy filing, a slimmed-down version of Sears Holdings emerged under the name Transform Holdco LLC. This new entity continued to operate a limited number of Sears and Kmart stores. However, Transform Holdco was privately held and therefore not publicly traded. Therefore, there was still no way to track Kmart individually on Google Finance.
Today, the company that owns Kmart is called Transform SR Brands LLC. While some Kmart stores still exist, their financial performance is not publicly accessible through Google Finance or similar platforms because the parent company is not publicly traded. Information about Kmart’s sales, profits, and overall financial health is considered proprietary to Transform SR Brands LLC.
In summary, you cannot find a direct Kmart listing on Google Finance because the company either existed as part of a larger publicly traded entity (Sears Holdings) or is now part of a privately held company (Transform SR Brands LLC). Google Finance, and similar platforms, only track publicly traded companies and their associated stock market data.
